Life in emacs -nox has been pleasant and I'm learning lots.But recently, I've discovered the joys of virtualization. Despite jumpingon the early Parallels bandwagon with my Macbook and running a kludgyunusable WinXP, my recent play with VirtualBox has made me see a wholenew light to emacs with ... magic GTK2! It took me the longest time andmuch head scratching as to why some emacs, particularly calendar-modedidn't work. It was only untila got gNewSense, xubuntu and other distros that I finally saw emacs in afull light: no more emacs -nw. It was like night (emacs -nw) and day(emacs). Now S-rt arrow actually moves to another day!! ORg-modecommands now work!! The only drawback to all this joy is thathttp://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/ is up to 23.3 and I'm having a toughtime with getting the dependencies for emacs with gtk and can't find asourcelist for this latest build. Yes you can blog from emacs!
WooHoo but I had to use a GUI browser to download the necessary files to make it work.
At first I tried emacs-w3m and even though was used to gopher and lynx back in the days of the real internet, I've become rusty with text based browsers and kept downloading the landing page of the elisp file instead of the code itself.

iA Writer, needs text inline option for email sharing

iA Writer has an odd habit of attaching the text in an email instead of containing the text in the message body.

The result makes mobile blogging a chore to clean up the mess.

Other apps will simply paste the text in the body of the email usually with their little add, ie sent by iApp.

Hopefully iA Writer will make this configurable, but maybe there is an issue with localization or encoding.

Fixing SCIM interference with setting marks in emacs

I was having trouble setting with the mark set command in emacs which is typically bound to ctrl-space. Everytime ctrl-space is invoked, scim, some program for smart input of ideograms would pop up a dialog box in the eeepc 701. With a little digging as in:
$which scim
Reveals a config file in /etc/scim
Using emacs, I just edited the command in the config file to control-space-t then did a reboot to the netbook.

When I returned to emacs, happily mark set returned with ctrl-space and i could highlight my regions in peace.

Faced with the anxiety that I irrevocably poisoned my internal organs or at least preserved them with processed meat, here is my latest sandwich recipe to set things right.

Greenwurst Sandwich

Take a handful of spinach and microwave for 45 seconds to shrink the leaves making them malleable.

Toast wheat bread, twice

Spread bean dip like hummus on one side and mayo on the other

Slap a slice of Muenster cheese on the mayo side

Top with the hot spinach which should melt the cheese a bit

Flip the bean side over, closing the sandwich and slice diagonally for flair.

The hard toasted bread texture paired with the gooey veggie insides is a nice contrast and in the whole, a quite filling repast.

Just say NO to ground up animals bound with nitrocarcinogenic poisons.

Your cells will love you.

dashes of tumeric

dashes of italian seasonings

a whiff of cumin

5 roughly chopped cloves of garlic

some grapeseed oil (would have used olive oil but ran out)

2 teaspoons salt

1 over ripe tomato

dash of powdered chicken bouillon (mmm, luv dat msg)

instructions

rinse lentils (i dont know why, but they says; i can fathom the difference between pebbles or lentils)

chop onion, carrots, garlic and throw in cast iron pot (Le Creuset will do)

hack bitok and sausage and throw into pot

add the rest of the stuff

heat medium until boiling, then simmer for about 45 minutes

await destiny.

Today, I was listening to a lecture by an esteemed neuro-
ophthalmologist, who has excelled in his chosen profession or rather
life's work exuding such engaging enthusiasm as he offered his pearls
of wisdom. You can hear it in his voice. Honed over years of training
and practice, these individuals have gone where few have because of
the time taken to arrive at their heightened state.

How do you condense years of clinical experience?

How do you make neural connections strong and held fast to a grander
architecture?

Sure someday a probabilistic artificial intelligent clinical decision
maker will enhance or overtake human capacity, but for now it was a
joy to witness in awe, cultivated wisdom. I could only understand
about two percent of what he was saying, but I was impressed
regardless.

I don't know why this gets me so excited because I can't use local

BPA chemical leaches into humans increasing potential risk for cardiovascular and endocrine threats.
I never took it seriously because it was a long term threat not an acute one.

A couple of years ago, we bought a couple of sets of Rubbermaid Premier food storage containers from Costco and put them through the rigors microwaving, dishwashing and cold storage. Unfortunately they have BPA. You know that plasticizer used in the hard polycarbonate plastics in food containers.

Unknown to us, the soft plastic Rubbermaid containers this Premier set replaced was BPA free and would have served us fine.

As a result of this recent study, we opted for Pyrex.

Why take the risk?

Pyrex is glass.

Made in America.

It is the stuff I used in chem lab where the stringency is reduction of contaminants in the end product of chemical reactions.

Well the singularity is off to good start with Wolfram Alpha, a
computing oracle that responds to your equations and more.

Focus and attention are coming back under the cognitive science node.
The chain of chess and meditation was short lived, but I still sit

I just tested Numenta's demo app of HTM and was pleasantly surprised it recognized up a Palm Pre image as a cellphone.

The Vision4 htm demo was trained on 4 image types:
- cellphones
- rubber duckies
- sail boats
- cows

I uploaded a Palm Pre stock photo I found and the frequency histogram showed a tall 'hit' for the cellphone type.

Why is this so frigging awesome?

Imagine the interface of remote diagnostics found in telemedicine where specialists connect to reading centers or directly to clinic and get a real time pre-filtered pool of photos to assess from this probability based htm recognition. It would significantly cut diagnostic time if the Numenta htm network can pre recognize from trained standard photos. Humans come into play after the assistance from the machine.

Should this be a part of Healthcare IT? u betcha!

TrueCrypt is wonderful for volume containers to keep my files in. But I recently learned that you can do stuff on the file level like so:

$ touch cryptme.txt

$openssl des3 -salt -in cryptme.txt -out encrypted.des3

$enter des-ede3-cbc encryption password: *************
$Verifying - enter des-ede3-cbc encryption password: *************
$ ls
cryptme.txt encrypted.des3

My Mac OS X experience was more successful and I skipped saving to the common bag altogether so there wasn't that issue to saving to the wrong bag.

Here are my notes (that I saved in my tiddlyweb) for InstallingTiddlyWeb currently at 0.9.7 if it helps others (like myself in 3 months!):

$sudo easy_install -U tiddlyweb

!create a new tiddlyweb instance and store example: tweb
$twanager instance tweb

!go into the new instance directory

!make a new bag, say wiki
$twanager bag wiki

!Copy over the system/TiddlyWebConfig to new bag by making a new tiddler

!Edit the server.workspace to the name of your bag, in this case, wiki.

One interesting thing is http://0.0.0.0:8080/bags/common/tiddlers shows nothing in the common bag ie 404 Not Found: No tiddlers in container. So the workspace isn't tied to common.

Seeing that the store is accessible from a USB flash drive, remote server or possibly a mobile device like maybe jailbroken ipod (go dev-team on redsn0w!) or the miniserver in Palm's new Pre WebOS, TiddlyWeb is closer to my dream of a scalable TiddlyWiki, flexible and mashable.

the localhost IP address for windows is 127.0.0.1 but over on the Mac it is 0.0.0.0.

Solution:

By golly gee whiz folks, ChrisDent 's magnifico TiddlyWeb works in my USB drive.

no php, mysql, lamp, xamp, gramp, server install
TiddlyWeb is a disembodied store of tiddlers or units of a TiddlyWiki entry.
simple enough for noobs like moi
whole lotta fun
and most importantly a viable solution to variable scaling of large humongo tiddlywikis

The idea is that these tiddlers (kinda like a email msg but in wiki form) can exist in bags and you can mix n' mash up your own recipes.

The whole lot of bags and recipes gets housed in a store, but with TiddlyWeb these stores can be in a whole host of places.

So imagine you very own server of tiddlers at work, at google app engine, at usb drive, at Kindle, at yo mama's netbook all connected when and how you want.

Amzing, n'est-ce pas?

here's what i did:

install tiddlyweb to host computer because of all the python easy install dependencies
make a store and add a bag
add TiddlyWebAutoSave and Adaptor plugins to your default bag
add TiddlyWebDefaulterPlugin with these changes as appropriate to your config:

HP's TX have garnered good reviews for a 'Tablet PC', but in reading some of the reviews of
HP TX1420 Tablet PC , I came to realize that Apple needs to clean MS's tablet 'clock' by announcing some crossbred iPhone/Macbook lovechild to kick Vista out of its collective consumer misery.

Granted I don't think the nichy Air is faring as well as expected but "please, Apple don't do a Palm and rest on your iPhone laurels." I'm really hoping some of those FCC exposures prove fruition.

Perhaps we are coming closer to that singularity where Intel and AMD can drop ship a Friston based HTM into a chip so my GoogleAibo can start teaching me how to properly filter fetch cogsci rss feeds.

The smart ones at ritescript did some nice text recognition for Evernote.
As you can see my screenshot of a search on evernote web of one of my faux moleskine journal pages reveals a nice match. This is promising as one of the killer features of my e-paper holy grail is image pattern recognition. Livescribe Desktop has it and now under Beta so does evernote, fer FREEEE, mind you.

Unfortunately, like all things complicated, the reading of text from images is not perfect. I tried using uniball vision fine red marker, ball point red and pencil using my best high school A- drafting block letter penmanship skills and evernote mismatched hazy for lazy. Sometimes there were false positives and text that is written askew from rotated camera shots or scans zonk their al gore rhythm.

They hope to make a business model on subscription, so if the kinks work out, I may just sign up to off-load my mind, moleskine, miquelrius onto ever ever note land.

If evernote is to succeed they have 2 things going for it besides its great functionality:

cross-platform: Mac Leopard (no tiger :-( Grrrrr...)), XP, Vista, web and soon mobile (doesn't work on Kindle's netfront browser though)

The Miquelrius + Sun Developer schwag moleskine-knockoff + pocketmod analog GtD back to basics system is still holding on.

There's a wonderful review of the Livescribe post JavaOne pre-SDK launch.

So what are the options now?

The Epos / DaneElec z-pen was also considered but they use the same MyScript ocr that is used on the Irex Iliad (heck the Palm had it too, I remember installing and playing with). The reviews have not been favorable on Amazon so it must still be Wowing France!

Pros: NO SPECIAL PAPER, heck you can write on anything.
Cons: gotta clip receiver for every page, don't block the ultrasound less your scribbles won't come out, watch batteries in a rechargeable world

IRex is hedging bets on a cheaper sans Wifi version of their Iliad, dubbed the 'Book' edition it has pretty much the same firmware as version2.

Palm, yes ye 'old' TX running Garnet. Wow, VM Garnet on Nokia tabs + StyleTap trying to sneak into the iPhone. If that happens maybe there is a bit of life yet. The vital signs are near critical for Palm and I wish them all the best.

Numenta needs to come out with a HTM for OCR that will knock off Anoto's socks/Vision Objects socks and will catapult them out of silent mode and into the public arena.

Apple?... hmmm iPhoneDev team you are our only hope...
Well I guess we'll see at WWDC in June.

Google Android - is interesting for the cross-platform ubiquity aspect and traction with devs coming onboard the app engine and other web-friendly APIs. I still Notebook on occasion along with delicious and scrapbook but really I'm a constant garbager of loose random data and I hope the Goog will resolve some of this.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out with e-ink, this new rebirth of the Anoto platform in the form of LiveScribe and all these other players.

All I want is searchable digital paper in the form of a 8.5 x 11 or half size

e-ink or solar to extend battery life
open format ie ocr Abbey-type conversion to txt
and 'search'-able content

My Kindle is close but I hate typing on chiclets.

What do you get when you click a Macbook trackpad with 2 fingers after enabling a secondary click under the System Preferences?

Right Click enabled under OpenSolaris running under VirtualBox on the Macbook, that's what!

I tried asking Amazon's NowNow via the Kindle, but sadly the underpaid minions could not figure it out. My question was: "How do you map the right click in a Mac under OpenSolaris?" The first answer from an 'experienced' user said, the right click on a macbook is ctrl-click. Duh?! and if I just mapped the ctrl-click then I'd be golden. Needless to say, I rated that answer poor. The other answer sent some planet opensolaris urls that ended nowhere.

It took me a moment to realize that if I can post this blog under OpenSolaris (meaning my network connection is passing through well, why not the Mac's system preferences?)

it worked.

How to get right clicking in OpenSolaris running on a Macbook:

open up system prefs in the Mac
set the secondary click to 2 fingers on the trackpad
when you launch OpenSolaris from VirtualBox, enjoy your right clicking.

I'm so happy I figured out how to do this.
It took a while as I don't know how to program but the concept has saved me a great deal of manual labour.

update: original script didn't take into account the last group of elements. If the last group consisted of just 1 element then the renumber worked, but if the group was > 1 then it stopped prematurely since it compared the current value to the last value and didn't consider all the duplicate values in between.

Here is the revised script now less complicated using just the index for comparison for the last value in the list:

There's a thread on MobileRead from the Post's article on Palm's life support

Garnet OS nor ALP has had any consumer initiatives.
There is strong contraction on development particularly with the independent software vendors.
Palm still has a bit of enterprise with WinMob, but RIM has made significant gains. With focus shifted to web services and RIAs a la android, iphone, adobe flash, silverlight the domain of the disconnected standalone PDA world has crumbled.

Palm has rested on the mobile space and slow to convert on their transition to smartphones and as we have seen from Moto, that is a no go.

The irony is Hawkins is the father of the smartphone, I still remember Handspring visor phone module, omnisky and motient wireless sled add-ons, then the treo progeny soon after. Heck my web clipping Palm VII was a primitive web appliance but as effective as Kindle today. Netfront, kindle's browser was on the Palm years before.

Garnet bashing aside, the good ol' palm still can email, has a full office suite, databases, play mp3s, display ebooks, handwrite pims, etc way b4 ipod touch,iphone, Nokia ITs.

But reality s(t)inks, people don't install 3rd party apps, and we live in iTunes/Amazon walled gardens where only early adopters jailbreak or saavy NIT users find comfort with debian repos.

As a long time Palm devotee and enthusiast, I can't help but feel saddened for what could have been...

There is a vaporous wisp of hope with Palm linux and sustained enterprise but it is fading every second.

I admit, I'm really enjoying the convenience of iTunes, kindle store, Hadrian's Feedbooks, manybooks, and the superlative efforts of the MobileRead community. And while I enjoy monkeying around with perl, python, installing scripts, plugins, hunting workarounds for format conversions, it is not a sustained effort. The price of convenience and laziness.
My hope is the infopad that was described by Michael Mace, formerly of Palm.

Leave the eee home, e-ink runs for days
I don't want youTube, TV or other mindless idiot carrier junk; I want a useful tool to engage the intertubes
Numenta's smarterchild HTM agent will assist, reminding, querying my feeds and locally collected debris, filtering the noise and give me a personalized Signal amidst the cacaphony of the Web
